Ahead of the upcoming World Greenpeace Day we’ve got some docos to get you as passionate about the environment as Greenpeace.

World Greenpeace Day is celebrated on the 15th of September. For those of you who haven’t heard of Greenpeace – it’s an international organisation that’s on the front line of the fight for the environment. They’ve had plenty of victories over environmental crimes while also bringing awareness to a range of environmental issues across the globe.
In celebration we’ve compiled a list of some of our favourite environmental films to get you as passionate about the environment as Greenpeace.
Even though community screenings have finished, a selection of SCINEMA films are available online. To kick us off, we’re looking at some of these SCINEMA entries that focus on the environment.
Why is blue so rare in nature? (2019)
This short film aims to squash the myth that there is no such thing as blue in nature. Researcher Joe Hanson looks at butterflies to understand how living things appear blue, and why it is so rare in nature.

Jeremy the Lefty Snail and Other Asymmetrical Animals (2019)
This crowd favourite is one not to miss. This film is the story about Jeremy, a one in a million snail whose shell coiled to the left, rather than the right. Follow Jeremy as he navigates relationships, heartbreak and children. We guarantee that you’ll fall in love with Jeremy – just like we all did.
Ant Sisters (2019)
This bite-sized animated film looks at the social lives of ants. The film draws on scientific research on the evolution of social insects to showcase the complex dynamics of human sisterhood. It’s an interesting short that shows the similarities between us, and social insects.
An Inconvenient Truth (2006)
This film follows former American candidate Al Gore on the lecture circuit as he tries to bring awareness and create immediate action on global warming.
Now depending on who you ask, this film is either the most important, or most damaging environmental film. Regardless, the film became a hit worldwide and triggered a massive shift in the public understanding of climate change.
Chasing Coral (2017)
We’ve all seen the news stories: coral reefs around the world are disappearing at unprecedented rates. In this film, a team of divers, scientists and photographers from around the world band together to document the disappearance of the reef. With our own Great Barrier Reef under threat, this film reminds us just how important or reefs are.
The Great Barrier Reef might look healthy from the surface, but underneath its a different story.
The True Cost (2015)
This film asks you to take a closer look at your fashion choices – and no we don’t mean whether that shirt matches with your pants. Instead, the film shines a light on the impacts that our clothing choices have on the people who make them, and also the impact on the environment. It reveals the grim realities of the global supply chain of fast fashion and will leave you considering where you buy your clothes from.
Anything David Attenborough
Would it really be an environmental documentary list without mention of this living legend? From the skies, to under the ocean there are too many to choose from. Planet Earth is the go-to classic. But there’s also Blue Planet, The Life of Mammals and my personal favourite Big Cats.
