23 Jun SCINEMA 2020 award winners announcement
SCINEMA in 2020 looks a little different, but what hasn’t changed is the quality of film submissions we received for the 20th year of the festival.
In these challenging times, many of those in the creative industries have lost their income, scientists have halted experiments, and film festivals have had to adapt. We’ve seen global changes happen almost instantaneously.
As a result, we’ve had to make some big changes to how we run and deliver SCINEMA. For almost three months, we, too, worked from home, endured the awkward team video chats, and had our pets make special guest appearances while we worked out how to keep SCINEMA going in these times.
We are proud to announce SCINEMA @ HOME. Science films delivered to your inbox. Stream over 60 awe-inspiring science films direct to your digital device for FREE throughout the month of August! Sign up now.
We were amazed by the entries this year. It was the pleasure of our team and our judging panel to watch these films but as they say, there can only be one winner (for each category).
The winners of the SCINEMA International Science Film Festival for 2020 are:
- Best Film: My Year of Living Mindfully
- Best Short Film: Scratching the Surface
- Award for Scientific Merit: She Walks with Apes
- Best Experimental/Animation: Bugbottle
- SCINEMA Junior: Animal Therapy
- Best Online Format: Reconnexion
- Social Impact Award: #NatureNow
This year, SCINEMA Junior, Best Online Format, and Social Impact Award are new categories which reflect the voices of the future, the evolving digital landscape (even before we had to pivot to an all-digital film festival), and the powerful use of film to make an impact.
For more details about the individual films, visit the Award Winners page.
During August you can stream a wide range of award-winning films and festival entries online for free in celebration of National Science Week.
With more films than ever before, you can make every night movie night and enjoy even more SCINEMA films from the comfort of your home.
We will also provide several teaching resources for teachers, home educators and parents to help bring SCINEMA into their physical (and virtual) classrooms. You can sign up to those here.
We couldn’t do this work without the support of National Science Week and BBC Earth.
